PostHeaderIcon Donâ??t Hurry Up the Decision- your Furniture is Going to Last for Years

Wood, Glass and wood laminates are not the only materials available in the market. Ask your dealer for the variety that he has available, and ask him which will best suit your requirements. And read on to be well prepared to take on your dealerâ??s expert sales talk.

Leather: Suitable for cold climatic conditions, leather offers a class not available to other forms of furniture. Restricted mainly to living room furniture, leather gives a royal look that is smart modern and long lasting as well. Again a word of caution for those with small children â?? leather furniture is very prone to damage by the likes of blades and knives. A cut with your kidâ??s play scissors would cost you fairly dear to repair, besides ruining the overall look of your sofa or chair. This is why you will generally find leather furniture at offices, or in the homes of people with grown up children.

Wrought Iron Furniture: Wrought iron is a material that has sturdiness built in along with the surety of a long life. After all, there is nothing stronger that metal. Though the material used in wrought iron is cast iron, which is a rather crudely refined form of the metal and fairly brittle, its strength is more than adequate for your household requirements. Donâ??t throw it around, however, or you may find yourself making a trip to the welder shop. There also you will have to look for a gas welder as cast iron does not lend itself to ordinary oxyacetylene welding.

Cane Furniture: A good alternative to normal heavy furniture is cane furniture. Available in a variety of designs and shapes, it is a worthwhile investment if you are looking for a decent, cheap alternative. While it may not offer the long life and sturdiness of Amish oak furniture, it is worth investing in if you are looking to change your furniture after a couple of years. Be careful of jutting nails and bang them right back in before they ruin your favorite dress. You could even add a cushion to avoid this eventuality. Cushions are available to suit all kinds of tastes and color combinations, and generally go well with a cane furniture set. Being hand made, cane furniture invariably has some rough edges, as well as the edges tend to chip off after a while, so adding a cushion is actually more of a necessity. Use hand painted cloth covers to add a touch of elegance and exclusivity.

Bamboo: This is a relatively less used form of furniture that has the advantage of immediately drawing attention to your choice. Like Amish made furniture, bamboo furniture is also hand made, and is thus an exclusive piece from the word go. Unlike Amish furniture, however, it will not just fit in anywhere, as by its very nature it is bulky and requires large spaces to give an admirable look. If you are short of space, then bamboo furniture is definitely not for you.

So go ahead and make your decision. Whatever you may decide, make sure you have done adequate market survey before you spend your hard-earned money. That is the way to get the best bargain.

PostHeaderIcon Bamboo

One of the most enduring images of India’s freedom struggle is that of Mahatma Gandhi setting out on the Salt March in 1930, on a 140 kilometre trek from Ahmedabad to Dandi. All he had by the way of support were the multitudes behind him, and the bamboo stave by his side. The bamboo in his hands, today more than ever before, is one of the newest hopes for a sustainable future. Found in almost every kind of climate and region, from cold mountains to tropical forests and marsh lands, the bamboo is the fastest growing plant on our planet. Environmentalists believe that if bamboo were used in a major way in afforestation programs the world over, there would be a significant reduction in global warming. Here are some of its other benefits to humans and their environments –

  • It is one of the cheapest renewable sources of building material available to man.
  • At the same time, it provides rural communities with a sustainable livelihood.
  • It is one of the fastest growing components of forests, and thus plays an important role in the development of animal habitats.
  • It costs neither a lot of energy nor money, to cultivate.
  • Bamboo has been an important part of art, music, tradition and ceremonies through out the Asian continent.

Varieties

There are approximately 91 general and about 1000 species of bamboo around the globe. These vary in height from about one foot plants to giant bamboos that grow over 100 feet. Broadly speaking, Bamboo is divided into 2 main classifications – Running Bamboo and Clumping Bamboo.

  1. Running Bamboo – This type of Bamboo travels under the soil using creeping rhizomes and emerges out of the ground at a distance from the original source. This variety is normally found in temperate climate countries like China and Japan. It is very effective in binding the soil together as the rhizome intersection is extensive and strong. Each joint of the Running bamboo stem has a single bud, which in many cases grow to become a new bamboo clump.
  2. Clumping Bamboo – In this variety, the clump and the rhizome are a single entity, in which the upper portion of the rhizome has buds. The bud then grow into a new rhizome which turns upwards and emerges, from the ground, as a second clump close to the original. This variety can also be grown from cuttings. They are normally found more in tropical and semi tropical climates.

PostHeaderIcon Vertical Murphy Beds Vs. Horiztonal Murphy Beds

While looking at all of your wall bed options, it is important to evaluate not only the floor space that you have available for the wall bed to operate in, but the wall and ceiling space as well. There are two main wall bed configurations to consider and each one lends itself to different space arrangements.

Vertical Wall Beds

Vertical wall bed systems are the more traditional, upright wall beds. In this configuration, the wall bed is stored vertically, and lowered into the room so that the length of the bed is perpendicular to the wall. This style of wall bed requires ceilings that are high enough to accommodate a fully upright bed. It is also important to note the amount of room allowed for the wall bed’s projection into the room once the wall bed is engaged. Whatever the height of the wall bed is while in its vertical storage position will then be translated into the floor space occupied when the wall bed is engaged. Vertical wall beds lend themselves nicely to utilizing accompanying storage units, such as vertical bookcases, without interrupting the visual line of the room.

Horizontal Wall Beds

Horizontal wall bed systems are ideal for rooms that have lower ceilings or less floor space for bed projection, such as rooms in the basement or attic of a home. These wall beds require enough wall space for the full length of the wall bed, as it is essentially a vertical wall bed turned ninety degrees. The projection of this style of wall bed into the room will be more shallow than that of a vertically standing wall bed, but will consequently be wider. Horizontal wall beds lend themselves nicely to rooms utilizing lower height storage units, such as desks or nightstands. Determining the space you would like your wall bed to occupy is a large step in on the road to making a final decision. It impacts not only the specific wall bed that you choose, but also the company from which you place an order, the accompanying furniture of the room, and eventually the feel that your room will have.
